description

Low table from the 1970s, designed by Dom Hans van der Laan, Netherlands.
The size and scale of this table makes it special. This version is much larger than we usually see in Dom Hans van der Laan's low tables. A grey-green stain was chosen for the wood finish, which is less common. There were only 5 colours to choose from, all inspired by nature. The distinctive nails used to cover the wooden planks for this piece are round shaped copper nails, which are also less common.
The low table was made as part of the furniture collection for Roosenberg Abbey, making the whole creation a Gesamtkunstwerk. He made nine pieces for this collection. Each piece may differ in size, but the proportions (the plastic number) must be respected.
Dom van der Laan was a Dutch monk from a family of architects. He made it his life's work to think about shapes and proportions, constantly searching for perfection within. He invented the plastic number, which refers to the relationship between depth, width and length. The plastic number was a way of interpreting space.
His brother Nico, also an architect, worked with him on many projects. The Bossche School, which is still relevant today, was founded on the basis of their teaching in architecture. Even today many architects are inspired by the Bossche School.
The table is in very good condition, but shows signs of light wear and patina over the years. It is completely handmade with the utmost care and due to the use of solid wood there is some shrinkage and warping. This adds to the character of this stunning architectural masterpiece!
