description

Willy van Eeckhout, a Flemish artist, was born in Mechelen on 21 July 1943.
He undertook his studies at the Academy of Arts in Mechelen, the National Higher Institute in Antwerp, the State Higher Institute of Arts in Brussels (RHoK) and the State Normal School in Hasselt.
Van Eeckhout's paintings are characterised by a distinctive expressiveness, an enigmatic quality, and a suggestive quality that defies definition. They are consistently executed with a fluid and dynamic touch.
In 1965, he ceased to work in a figurative style and instead began to create abstract pieces. This was prompted by Walter Vilain and Kandinsky's book Das Geistige in der Kunst. This transition occurred during the Op- and Pop Art period. He prefers this direction because he believes it is the most free, universal, spiritualised, and profound form of art.
A painterly 'fever', an inner need, regularly manifests itself and must be satisfied through the act of joyful painting and a profound reverence for the medium of oil paint.
